Did you know India is the second largest Arms Importer in the world! And this is a huge cause for concern. Think about it, in the current geopolitical tensions across the globe, it’s a huge risk to depend on the likes of US, Russia, France for our defense equipiment. Understanding this Risk, the government of India has been pushing for Make In India in the defense sector with various policies.

As per the Defense Production Policy of 2018 & 2020, India aims to be the Top 5 producers of of the aerospace and defence manufacturing and want to increase the sector’s turnover to US$ 25 billion, including US$ 5 billion from exports, by 2025.

Every year, the government is putting a lit of equipments that they will not be importing and will solely on domestic suppliers.

This is creating a huge opportunity for businesses in India to manufacture defense equipments. The likes of Adani, Reliance, L&T and Tata have made huge investments in this sector over the last few years.

It also creates opportunities for Small and Medium Businesses to create specific parts that can then be supplied to private or public companies building large defense equipments.

This is defeinitely a capital intensive business and that results in higher barriers to Entry. So, for businesses that can figure out how to enter, there is definite profit to be made here.
